Choosing an NYC Body Shop: 7 Questions to Ask Before Authorizing Repairs
Finding a body shop can feel like another task on top of an already difficult day. Start with a clear conversation: what can the shop inspect, what needs to be documented, and what happens before you authorize work?
This checklist helps New York City drivers prepare. It is not a diagnosis, repair estimate or insurance-coverage determination.
1. Is the shop registered with New York DMV?
Check the shop’s registration rather than relying on a logo or advertisement. The official New York DMV auto-repair guide links to its business lookup: https://dmv.ny.gov/know-your-rights-in-auto-repair
2. What needs an in-person inspection?
Describe the visible damage and ask what may remain unknown until inspection or disassembly. Photos can help explain a request, but they cannot establish the complete repair scope or determine whether a damaged vehicle is safe to drive. If you are unsure, arrange appropriate professional assistance before moving it.
3. Can I get a written estimate?
Ask for an itemized written estimate and whether preparing it carries a charge. Ask what is included, what is excluded, and how additional work will be authorized. New York DMV explains that consumers may request a written estimate and that shops need permission before exceeding the estimated amount. See the DMV guide above.
4. Who confirms insurance coverage and payment?
Ask your insurer about your policy, deductible, claim process and documentation. Keep the shop’s repair assessment separate from the insurer’s coverage decision. New York’s Department of Financial Services explains that you retain the right to choose the shop repairing your damaged vehicle. That choice does not itself determine what an insurer will pay. 5. What parts and procedures are proposed?
Ask the shop to explain its proposed parts and procedures in writing. If it advertises a certification, ask what it covers and how it applies to your vehicle. For vehicles with cameras or driver-assistance equipment, ask whether inspections or calibrations are relevant to the planned work.
6. What could change the timeline?
Ask when an inspection and repair slot may be available, how parts or additional findings could affect timing, and who will send updates. Treat a preliminary date as a discussion point until the shop confirms the schedule.
7. What paperwork will I receive?
Ask for the final itemized invoice and written terms of any warranty offered. Keep your estimate, authorizations, invoices and correspondence together. Compare the paperwork and ask the shop to explain any difference. The DMV guide describes invoice and warranty requirements.

Gather your vehicle year, make and model, ZIP code, preferred timing, a short description of visible damage and your questions. Avoid sending medical information, driver’s-license images or insurance-policy documents through a general website inquiry.
